What is vibrating screen?
Aug 20, 2025
A vibrating screen (also known as a vibro sifter or vibration sieve) is a piece of equipment used to separate materials based on their size. It works by putting a screen (a surface with holes) into rapid motion, causing the material on top of it to separate into different grades.
Think of it as an industrial version of a kitchen sieve, but instead of shaking it by hand, a powerful motor shakes the screen for you, and it can process tons of material per hour.
How does it work?
The basic principle involves three key components:
* The Screen Deck: A frame holding one or more mesh screens (or perforated plates) with specific hole sizes.
* The Vibrator: A motor with heavy weights attached to the top and/or bottom of the shaft. As the motor spins, the weights create an imbalance, causing the screen frame to vibrate (shake) in a circular, elliptical, or straight-line motion.
* The Material:
Raw material is fed onto the top of the screen.
The vibration makes the material move down the length of the screen.
Particles smaller than the holes fall through (called undersize or fines).
Particles larger than the holes stay on top and eventually fall off the end (called oversize or tails).

Common Types of Vibrating Screen
Several designs depend on the application:
* Inclined Screen: The screen is tilted at an angle (15–30 degrees). Gravity helps the material move down the screen quickly. Best for: High-volume processing of rocks or gravel.
* Horizontal Screen: The screen is flat. Vibration does all the work to move the material. Best for: When you need the material to stay on the screen longer for a more precise separation.
* High-Frequency Screen: Operates at a very fast vibration speed. Best for: Separating very fine materials (like sand) or dewatering (removing water from sludge).
* Trommel Screen: A rotating cylinder with holes, rather than a flat shaking screen. Best for: Waste processing and sticky materials.
What Is Vibrating Screen Used For?
Vibrating screens are used in almost every industry that deals with bulk solids:
* Mining & Quarrying:
Separating crushed rock into different sizes (e.g., gravel for roads vs. sand for concrete).
Washing aggregate to remove dirt.
* Aggregates & Construction:
Classifying sand, gravel, and crushed stone.
* Agriculture:
Sorting harvested crops (e.g., separating peas by size, or removing debris from seeds).
Grading potatoes or onions.
* Recycling:
Separating different sizes of recyclable materials (e.g., separating small glass shards from large plastic pieces).
* Industrial Processing:
Removing oversized lumps from powders before packaging.
Dewatering (removing water from) materials like coal or sludge.
Key Terms of Vibrating Screen
* Mesh/Opening Size: The size of the holes in the screen (e.g., 10mm, 1/4 inch).
* Blinding: When wet material clogs up the holes in the screen, stopping the flow.
* Capacity: How much material the screen can process in an hour (tons per hour).
